Shopify order edits not syncing to Printify? What to check before it prints
A customer asks for a different size, so you edit the order in Shopify. Shopify says it's saved. Printify still has the old order, and that's the one it will print.

What we found when we tested it
On a test store connected to Printify, we placed four orders for a T-shirt and let Printify import them, which took seconds. Then we edited each one in Shopify's admin, while the orders were still on hold in Printify and nothing had gone to production:
- Removed an item. Printify still had it, ready to print.
- Reduced a quantity from 2 to 1. Printify still had 2.
- Added an item. Printify never received it.
- Swapped a variant (white to black, same size). Printify still had the white one.
None of the four edits reached Printify, and Shopify gave no warning. Printify's support has told merchants the same thing: changes made to an order in your sales channel won't sync to Printify. Printify keeps its own copy of the order from the moment it arrives.
Why it's easy to miss
Shopify shows the edit as done, with the right items, the right total and the refund or extra payment handled. Everything you look at says the problem is fixed. The only place that still has the old order is the place that makes and ships it.
Step 1: make the same change in Printify
- Every time you edit an order in Shopify, open the same order in Printify (under My orders, by its Shopify order number) and make the matching change there.
- Printify lets you change an order while it's still on hold. Once it's in production, it's too late to edit.
- If Printify won't let you make the change, cancel that order in Printify and create a new manual order with the right items.
Step 2: give yourself time to catch it
Customers often ask for changes within an hour or so of ordering. If Printify sends orders to production straight away, there may be no window to fix them. Check the order settings in your Printify account and consider holding new orders for your approval, or for a delay, before they go to production.
Step 3: check the orders you've already edited
If you've edited orders in Shopify recently, compare each one with Printify's copy, item by item: the products, the sizes and colours, and the quantities. Any order where they differ will be printed the old way unless you fix it.
What about cancellations and addresses?
Some merchants report that cancelling a whole order in Shopify reaches Printify. In our test it didn't: we cancelled two of the orders in Shopify the next day, and twelve minutes later Printify still had both as live orders. (Ours were waiting for payment, since the test account had no card, so yours may behave differently.) After cancelling in Shopify, check that Printify shows the order as cancelled too, and cancel it there if not.
Address changes are reported to sync inconsistently. We haven't tested those, so check Printify's copy after changing an address too.
Has this cost you a reprint?
We build small apps that check that one business tool really has what another says it sent. We're deciding whether to build one that compares each edited Shopify order with Printify's copy and emails you when they differ, before it prints. If this has happened to you, tell us how often and what it cost. It helps us decide.
