ShipStation shipped it, Shopify still says unfulfilled? How to find and fix them
The label is printed and the parcel is gone. In Shopify the order still says unfulfilled, there's no tracking, and the customer never got a shipping email. Here's how to find every order it happened to, and how to send the updates again.

Why it matters more than it looks
When ShipStation doesn't tell Shopify an order shipped, three things go wrong quietly. The customer gets no shipping confirmation or tracking, so "where's my order?" emails follow. The order sits in Shopify's unfulfilled list, so your team may ship it twice. And anything that runs on fulfilment (review requests, loyalty points, some reports) never starts.
It usually affects many orders at once, not one. One merchant found thousands of orders showing unfulfilled in Shopify that had all shipped in ShipStation.
Step 1: find every affected order
- In Shopify, filter your orders to Unfulfilled and sort by date, oldest first. Anything older than your normal shipping time is a suspect.
- Search ShipStation for a few of those order numbers, on the Shipments tab. If they have shipments there, the parcel went out and only the update to Shopify is missing.
- Note when it started: the date of the oldest order that shipped but stayed unfulfilled. Everything from that date on needs checking.
Step 2: check the settings that stop the update
ShipStation's own troubleshooting points to a few settings that block the update to Shopify on purpose:
- "Do not notify marketplace" on an order (in its other shipping options). While it's on, ShipStation won't update Shopify, even if you resend.
- Delayed notifications in the store's settings in ShipStation. If it's set to wait, the update goes out later, not when the label is made.
- When notifications are sent. Some merchants found their email settings tied the Shopify update to a step they never reached, or to "don't send email", which stopped the update too.
Step 3: check the connection
If the settings are fine and no orders are updating at all, the link between ShipStation and Shopify is the likely problem. Check the store in ShipStation still shows as connected, and reconnect it if Shopify's permissions for ShipStation were changed or removed. Reconnecting fixes new shipments, not the ones already missed.
Step 4: send the missed updates again
- In ShipStation, go to the Shipments tab, select the affected shipments and use Notify Marketplace. This sends the shipment and tracking to Shopify again.
- Then check in Shopify that the orders now show as fulfilled with tracking. Merchants report that a resend doesn't always arrive, and that orders split into several shipments are harder to fix.
- Decide whether to email those customers their tracking yourself, since a late update may not send the shipping email.
Would an automatic check help?
We build small apps that check that one business tool really has what another says it sent, and stay quiet unless it doesn't. We're deciding whether to build one for this: comparing each shipped order in ShipStation with Shopify and emailing you when Shopify never heard. If this has happened to you, tell us how often and what it cost. It helps us decide.
